“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” -Bill Vaughan
A New Year means plenty of new tech trends and innovations coming our way! Here are a few of the trending topics to keep an ear and eye out for in 2017:
Augmented reality in retail
And everywhere, for that matter. Retailers are looking at AR as the solution for selling in a more efficient, affordable way. Not only does it allow customers to view 3D models of products, it’s also predicted to be a better way of engaging more customers by eliminating their greatest shopping annoyances.
Social virtual reality
As you already know, Facebook has already started looking into social VR (think Oculus). With the development of VR games and cinema, as well as the impending ability to stream concerts and games, it’s no coincidence that VR goggles were one of the hottest gifts last December.
Invisible wearable devices
AI devices, like Alexa and Google Home, are expected to become even more mainstream in 2017.
“This will be the first year in which AI-generated art will achieve commercial success. An artist will use an AI-created element, like a song melody, in a piece of work that achieves mainstream recognition,” explained Nvidia’s Bryan Catanzaro, Vice President, Applied Deep Learning Research. Data security concerns
Data security has been a hot topic in 2016, particularly in the political climate, and concerns for data security are expected to rise in 2017.
Solar powered company buildings
Going green in 2017? You aren’t alone. Solar power is expected to be a trending topic in 2017, with ConsumerReports saying, “As more households switch to solar, overall electric costs are likely to come down, leading to lower bills for all ratepayers.”
More autonomous vehicles
2017 is going to be all about autonomous automobiles, and we’ll all be talking about car sharing, ride sharing, and *gulp* self-driving cars. In fact, at the very end of 2016, Tesla autopilot was reported to predict a crash before it happened. The future freaks me out, man.
Companies like Here One released wireless headphones that connected to devices in 2016 (we see you, IoT). In 2017, expect to see more people walking around looking like they’re talking to themselves…maybe they are, or maybe they’re just wearing the future in their ears.
New Nike HyperAdapt shoes
These might not be a 2017 trending topic, but they are really cool. Basically, these shoes use laces that automatically adjust to whomever is wearing them. These self-tying shoes are only the beginning because what seems trendy and limited edition in 2016 just be mainstream in 2017. If the shoe fits…(and apparently it will)…we should wear it!
