How Can Bots Help Businesses Thrive?

Let’s start by talking about what exactly a bot is.

A bot is software that is designed to automate the kinds of tasks you would usually do on your own, like making a dinner reservation, adding an appointment to your calendar or fetching and displaying information. The increasingly common form of bots, chatbots, simulate conversation. They often live inside messaging apps — or are at least designed to look that way — and it should feel like you’re chatting back and forth as you would with a human. (Source)

What’s really neat about bots is that they understand natural language, which means you can have an actual conversation with them. In fact, there’s a good chance that you’ve already met and spoken to a bot–ever heard of a little something called Alexa? Bots are great for performing support-type tasks. In fact, Microsoft’s Cognitive Services QnA maker can read the FAQ section of your website and then use that information to make a support bot with their bot framework. Amazing, right?!

The bot framework can be consumed by many of your favorite chat tools, such as slack.  The goal is to make the interaction so good that people don’t even realize they’re chatting with a bot.

Though most experts agree that bots won’t kill apps, most believe that they will take over parts of apps that involve things like complex transactions and customer service. And for businesses, bots can be the solution they need to save time and money, taking over mundane tasks or simple interactions and allowing businesses to better spend their time on more pressing projects.

Logical Advantage (LA): How did you first start working with bots?

Pon Arunkumar Ramalingam (PAR): Inspired by the presentations at the annual Facebook Developer Conference (F8), I started working with conversational bots both for personal and professional use cases. 

LA: Will your presentation touch on how bots are transforming business use cases?

PAR: Sure, I will be presenting on how businesses thrive by developing human-like behavioral conversational applications in their growing digital ecosystem.

LA: What are some of the distinct benefits of using bot services?

PAR: Distinct benefits of using bot services vary on industry specific usage. Overall, the go-to-market timeline would be minimal when compared to the traditional development cycle. Microsoft Bot as A Service propels the development process with support to CI Continuous Integration and Deployment. 

LA: What more can you tell us about the demo you’ll be showing?

PAR: The demo will cover the featured services available, as well as various types of bots that could be published ranging from Flow to Proactive.

LA: What do you hope participants of your Lunch & Learn will take away from your event?

PAR: Developers will take away the set of skills needed to build their own bot. Managers would take away key metrics and use cases in managing bot projects. Strategic management and sales teams would take away insights into how bot applications would provide better ROI in their technology ecosystems to enhance their business. Business leaders would take away the various low cost models available to them in bot adoption.
